The purpose of the Guys of Grace ministry is to help equip the men of God for good works.  We believe we can encourage this through studying the Word of God, prayer, and building edifying relationships with other men in the church body.

How do we try to accomplish this?

Wednesday night Bible Study
2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”  Here at GCPC, we strive to be men of God.  To do that, we believe we need to be men of the Word.  Back in 2014, we began studying through the Book of Galatians.  This was followed in 2015 by our study through the Gospel of Matthew, which completed in early June 2016.  In late June 2016, we began a new study on the Book of Romans, and just recently completed it in October 2017.

On October 25th, we began our new study on the Scriptural proofs behind the Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF).

The WCF along with the Larger and Shorter Catechisms were first produced in 1646-1647 as a result of an “Assembly of Divines” at Westminster Abbey in London. Though minor revisions have been done over the years it has stood the test of time as a written expression of the systematic theology we believe is taught in the Bible. Our denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America has adopted the WCF as our secondary standard with the Bible clearly being the only infallible rule of faith and practice. Officers in our denomination (and therefore all elders and deacons here at GCPC) vow to “sincerely receive and adopt” these confessional documents “as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures.”

Our plan is to study and read not only what the Westminster Divines wrote, but more importantly the Biblical proofs they cited for what they wrote. Each week we will tackle one of the chapters and consider together the Scriptural texts that combine to form the basis for our doctrinal beliefs. If you have questions about what we Presbyterians believe and why then please consider joining us as we go through this together. Agree with the WCF but want to dig deeper in to it? Disagree with parts of the WCF and want to reason with others through those issues? New to the PCA? If any of these describe you then this study will be perfect for you!

This study is open to all guys, young, and not so young.  Jr. High and older are welcome.   Our study begins at 7pm at the church, typically in the Calvin room at the end of the hall.

Our upcoming dates are

  • November 22nd
  • December 6th
  • December 20th
  • January 3rd

Tuesday morning Prayer

In addition to being men of the Word, we also believe we MUST be men of prayer.  In Ephesians 6:18 the Apostle Paul says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.  With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”   As a church body, we acknowledge our dependence on God, and trust in His goodness, faithfulness, and love for His people by consistently going to Him in prayer.

So, every Tuesday morning, the men gather at the church to pray.  Each week these men humbly lift up the families in the church.  If you would like to participate, we meet every Tuesday morning at 6:15 am.

Men’s Breakfast
In the summer of 2016, John Hamby began organizing some men’s breakfasts on the third Friday of each month.  Our upcoming breakfast October 20th, and November 17th.  We typically meet at 9:30am, at “Our Café”, which located at the corner of Beach and Basswood.   Come join us for some good food and good fellowship.  Contact John Hamby if you are interested or have any questions.

Men’s Movie Night
Several times a year Phil Bassett organizes a Men’s Movie night.  This is an opportunity for the guys to go see a movie together, and then afterward have a time of fellowship and discussion over some food and drinks.

– We should have additional movie nights in November and December, 2017.  Keep an eye out in the weekly worship bulletin, or listen for announcements after worship.

Equipping Conferences & Retreats
In 2014 & 2015 we held multiple conferences for the men in the church.  The goal being to further equip the men of the church, and to give the men a way to get to know each other and build edifying friendships.  In 2014 we had three conferences centering on our primary purpose to worship our Creator and God.  We divided this into three areas:  Corporate Worship, Family Worship, and Personal Worship.  In 2015, we had another three conferences centering around three critical components in equipping a man of God.  Prayer, Studying the Word, and the Sacraments.  The audio for these conferences is available on our website.  You can find it under the Resources tab, under Audio resources.  At the bottom of that page, you can find the link to the GoG Equipping Conferences audio.

Also in the summer of 2015, we had our first Men’s retreat.  It was a wonderful opportunity for the men of the church to spend time together, while learning how to better read and study the Bible.

In the future, we intend to have further conferences and retreats.  We’ll post updates in the weekly bulletin and the website, when we have one on the schedule.
